Our Za’ater Spice blend is a Middle Eastern blend containing herbs, sesame seeds and sumac (a deep red coloured Middle Eastern citrus flavoured berry). Delicious with breads, hummus and fish. This is largely an undiscovered blend, but one that has crept into our kitchen from the likes of the acclaimed chef, Ottolenghi.
What is Za’Ater?
Za’ater has it’s origins in Arabic, referring to a herb plant related to the mint family and also to a herby spice blend. Our Za’ater spice blend is created from an array of taste-tantalising ingredients including sesame seeds, sumac, oregano and marjoram. The Za’ater spice blend is definitely one to try!
Recipe Ideas
Here are three inspirational ideas for how to use our Za’ater spice blend.
Quick & Easy:
Mix 1 tsp with 2 tbsp olive oil, add salt and brush onto freshly toasted pitta bread, tortilla or flat breads, Serve warm.
More Authentic:
Mix with oil and rub all over lamb or chicken for a distinctive and delicious roast dinner.
Cooking to Impress:
Marinade fish with a mixture of olive oil, salt, lemon juice, za’atar and parsley. Then pan fry the fish.
Hints & Tips:
- Mix plain yogurt with 1 tsp of za’atar for a refreshing dip for flatbreads, carrots and celery
- Add a squeeze of olive oil and a sprinkle of Za’atar to hummus
- Use Za’ater as a salad dressing from simply adding to olive oil and salt or by further adding crushed garlic and some lemon juice
